THE  IMPORTANCE  OF  ENGINEERING  DESIGN  IN  CONSTRUCTION  PROJECTS

Face it, if you have worked in the construction sector your interface with an engineering discipline of any kind will occur eventually.  This maintains evident for the vice versa circumstance as well.  However, more often in not, the engineering discipline interface with construction expertise does not occur early enough in the design phase of the project.  Which is unfortunate due to the fact that interface, by definition, is a point where two systems, subjects or organizations interact.  This interface is apparent in the engineering and construction relationship, as it also holds true in the sales and marketing relationship, and so on.  Therefore, interaction, communication, alignment is imperative the relationship.  Organizations that do not incorporate an effort for consistent engineering design  and construction project alignment, are sabotaging their opportunity to execute a successful project.  In order to advert this sabotage, a sub-project associated with the desired alignment parties, will be established on your project by:
1. Determine key individuals who are deemed accountable for the success of this relationship, via the outcome of measurable tasks, who are on both the engineering design team and the construction management team.  Identification of  both individuals should rely on predetermined credentials of competency, as it pertains to the role at hand.
2.  Identify three accountability check points. Typically three accountability checkpoints should align closely with the projects' key performance indicators (KPIs), already predetermined.  Each accountability check point should have a recovery plan in the event the goal is not achieved; and a repercussion in the event the recovery plan is not satisfied.  Recovery plans are common staples in the project world.  Basically identifying the opportunity
3. Each accountability check point should be measureable. This is a requirement.  Without it your project will  For example, a great measureable unit in the project management realm would be time.  Yes, time which equals schedule which equals completion,  which finally equals operational dollars. After all accountability without a unit of measure defeats the entire intent to pursue.
